This site is a tribute to the enduring memory of late Maestro Azad Rahaman, the preeminent musical personality for an entire generation of Bengalis.
Azad Rahaman was a celebrated music composer and director, lyricist, vocalist and mentor. He was immensely revered by a multitude of cultural connoisseurs and musical followers at home and abroad. In the Bengali cultural arena, Azad Rahaman, during his lifetime, always endeavoured to give music an institutional form. This was reflected time and again in the various media in which he was associated with-- radio, television and films or in administrative positions he held in different government and non-governmental bodies.
Azad Rahaman was an accomplished classical musician and pianist, and a pioneer in popularising Hindustani Classical Music in the Bangla language, referred to as ‘Bangla Kheyal’. By maintaining all the traits of classical music, accuracy and distinctiveness of the raagas, the depth of music, clarity in pronouncing lyrics and the style of singing classical music, he reaffirmed the originality of Dhrupod, Dhamar and Kheyal in the Bangla language. This was an invaluable contribution to the preservation of the definitiveness of the Bengali culture and in the promotion of classical music.
